There are a couple of State employee unions that have their own health trusts, but over 5,000 employees, including Correctional Officers belong to the State’s Health Plan, “AlaskaCare”. There are several levels of insurance you can participate in. The State pays the costs to belong in what is called the Default plan, which pays 70% of covered medical expenses after the deductibles are met and also provides the Preventative Dental Plan, which covers little more than routine exams and cleaning. If you want to upgrade to a more expensive plan the difference between the cost of the default plan and the cost of the plan you select comes out of your pay each month. You also have options to select vision insurance, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, survivor benefits, and disability insurance. These selections all come out of your pay but for the most part are fairly reasonable.

Please Be Aware
It is essential that each of you periodically verify and update your designated beneficiaries with the State of Alaska. Tragedies and sickness can happen quickly and unexpectedly. No one can change your beneficiaries after you are gone. They will be the people you listed the last time you updated the forms with the State of Alaska. We urge you to check your designations to ensure that they reflect your current situations and desires.
